Change of Plans

No sooner had I written out my plan for getting my home ready for a big Thanksgiving gathering, than I got a call from my mother suggesting that we change plans and have our family dinner at the lake, so that more people could come.

My emotions went a little something like this:

Uhhh . . . but that wasn’t what I had planned.  (Read that with a bit of a whine in your voice.  I am a control freak, after all.)

Yay!  It will be fun to include my aunt and uncle.

Oh.  I really was looking forward to having everyone over to our house.  (We’re the oddballs who live an hour away from everyone else so we don’t host family gatherings very often.)

Ugh, so I won’t have the motivation to clean those ceiling fans whose dust I now can’t seem to NOT see.

Ummmm, WHAT is my problem?  Let’s just do the happy-boogie-dance that I don’t have to stress about cleaning at the same time I’m stressing about all the details for the Christmas play I’m directing.

I was looking forward to having Thanksgiving here this year. I’ve known for three years that it was coming, and I have almost a year and a half of deslobification under my belt.  I was pretty proud that I was taking the whole impending-doorbell-thing in stride.

But life is all about being flexible, and I can definitely see the bright side of this situation.  More family will be able to join in, and I don’t have to be paranoid that someone will to try to be helpful and go searching through the master bathroom for an extra roll of toilet paper.

Besides, now I have another year before it’s my turn to host.  Maybe by then, I’ll have this slob-thing completely kicked and will have the time to hand-knit the napkins and place mats!

Not that I know how to knit.

Great post, Nony, and shows how far you’ve come in a year that you were DISAPPOINTED that people weren’t going to come to your house!
