Tackling the Scary Room - A Slob Comes Clean

You probably think I’m talking about the infamous Master Bedroom.

No, this time it’s the playroom. The room I pretend doesn’t exist. I have purged it again and again, and it does stay farther away from total disaster now, but somehow, there’s always more that can go.

Last weekend I decided to open the cabinet that never gets opened. It was a really great storage place when I first put things in it. At least it seemed like it. The cabinet was full of . . . well . . . here’s the picture:

There were videos galore. Puzzles with pieces everywhere, books, games, etc.

The main problem was that for the first few years we lived here, I had a child lock on the cabinet so the kids wouldn’t pull everything out. I guess that meant that the kids never really used the cabinet, so even when they were old enough to be able to have it accessible, it wasn’t in their vision. It basically became a “stuffing spot” where things went to die.

I might dig through the cabinet when we needed a free movie night, but more often than not, I never thought to even look in there unless I needed a place to shove something. In reality, most of the things shoved in there should have just been given away at the point they went into the cabinet, because here is what it looked like after I made two huge “get rid of” piles and one big bag of trash:

The saddest part is that my 4yo has been loving the puzzles I found. They were brand new to her, even though I bought them (at garage sales, of course) when my 8yo was a toddler. I’m glad she is enjoying them, but I feel a great amount of guilt that they have been wasted all this time.

Have moved from New England to the south. My 2 young grandsons and their legos are taking over my house. I seriously feel they need a designated playroom. Their mom works alot, Ideas?

It’s been a long time since you asked, but my mom used to keep Lego in a 5 gallon bucket in the closet. When my kids got into Lego, we transferred it into a rolling cart with drawers that can be moved to the study/guest room.
